TITLE:
Special Education Paraprofessional
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Provide one-to-one personal care, academic and/or behavioral support for student(s) with disabilities served in general and/or special education environments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Obtain a qualifying score of 455 or better on the ParaPro Assessment
- Proven experience working with students with disabilities
- Effective communication skills; oral, written, and visual with adults and children
- Understanding of basic principles of childhood development
- Familiarity with educational software or willingness to learn
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
REPORTS TO:
Principal and Special Education Teacher / Case Manager
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide instructional reinforcement under the direction of the classroom teacher in executing lesson plans and Individual Education Plans
- Assist with implementation of behavior management and/or medical management plans
- Assist in data collection processes, as needed
- Assist in handling students’ personal care needs (handle student toileting / change student clothes as needed)
- Support students in cafeteria lines and eating in cafeteria/classroom during breakfast and lunch, as needed
- Prep foods and physically assist or feed students during breakfast and lunch
- Provide guarded or direct assistance during transition changes from wheelchair to appropriate setting, i.e., changing table/mat or bean bag, stander, gait trainer
- Maintain confidentiality with regard to student records and information
- Directly implement or assist in fulfilling students' daily personal health maintenance tasks
- Serve bus, cafeteria, or hall duty
- Assist students with use of equipment such as standers, gait trainers, and personal communication devices, under the training and supervision of related service personnel such as OT, PT, VI specialists
- Serve as a positive, nurturing guide for students
- Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, staff, and community, following and upholding school rules and standards
- Supervise students in both instructional and non-academic activities across educational environments
- Participate in planning sessions with the learning team, communicating with parents and school officials as needed
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 180 days – 10 month contract

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel
