TITLE:
Library Media Specialist
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
- To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth
- To aid and promote students acquiring the skills needed to take advantage of library media resources
- To assist students and staff in retrieving analyzing, organizing, communicating, and evaluating information and ideas that encourage the utilization of library materials, no-print resources and technologies
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Virginia State Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Library Media Specialist PreK-12
- 1 to 2 years of successful classroom teaching, preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
REPORTS TO:
Principal or Designated Administrator
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, administration, and the general public
- Maintain an appropriate teaching and learning environment in the library media center
- Listen and respond to information requests in a manner that encourages further inquiry
- Exhibit ethical behavior
- Demonstrate a commitment to the profession
- Implement standardized procedures for classifying, cataloging, processing, and circulating resources for the internal holdings collection
- Implement procedures for ongoing inventory and maintenance of resources and equipment
- Organize and maintain current bibliographic records
- Coordinate the internal holdings acquisition process for resources, equipment, and supplies as well as external information access points
- Design, establish, and communicate goals, policies, and procedures for the implementation of an effective library media program
- Prepare and administer the library media budget based on program needs
- Utilize existing and assess emerging technologies for instructional and management applications
- Identify and apply criteria appropriate for selecting resources of all formats and at all grade levels and accompanying equipment
- Ensure the school’s philosophy, curriculum, and instructional needs of teachers is reflected in the evaluation and selection process
- Recommend strategies and creative uses of resources
- Provide specific instruction and resources in response to information needs identified in the curriculum development process
- Motivate and guide students in the development of an appreciation of literature
- Motivate and guide students in the development of reading, listening, and viewing competencies, including critical thinking skills for independent lifelong learning
- Assist students and teachers in retrieving, analyzing, interpreting, organizing, evaluating, synthesizing, and communicating information and ideas
- Participate as an educational partner in the curriculum development process at both the building and district levels
- Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
Involves limited physical tasks including lifting, and may involve operation of equipment such as computers,
copiers, overhead projectors, etc.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten month extended contract; Salary based upon teacher’s scale extended days

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of
Personnel
