TITLE:
Registered Nurse
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Responsible for performing professional nursing care and providing health care services to students and staff in
the public school setting. Position organizes the health clinic at the assigned school; performs and interprets
health screenings and medical examinations; assesses student health needs; administers emergency/first aid
treatment; provides health counseling; and conducts related workshops. Provide a safe and healthy
environment in order to maximize students’ potential to learn.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hold a Registered Nurse license issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing
- Hold a valid CPR certification
- Demonstrate current knowledge in such areas as: professional issues in school nursing, communicable disease control, growth and development, health assessment, chronic and acute special health conditions, injury prevention, health counseling, and current adolescent issues
- Ability to organize a clinic and maintain comprehensive health records
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, and outside agencies
REPORTS TO:
Principal & Health Service Coordinator
PERFORMANCE REPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct school health screening programs as directed by Board policy
- Provide first aid to injured students and staff, provide everyday care of acutely ill students, and manage students with communicable disease
- Ability to respond to emergency situations
- Perform prescribed medical procedures and treatments in school
- Administer prescribed medication in school according to Board policy
- Assess student response to nursing actions in order to revise care plans
- Document pertinent information in student records or confidential nursing notes
- Maintain up-to-date immunizations and cumulative health records on all students
- Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters as directed by policy
- Handle and lift equipment and students as required
- Participate in safety/staff meetings and trainings as assigned
- Flexible to work in all schools as assigned
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
192 days of employment;
