TITLE:  Reading Specialist-Title I-Elementary

 

QUALIFICATIONS:      

  • A Professional Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in the area assigned is required.
  • Eligible for a Reading Specialist Endorsement.
  • Successful teaching experience for 3-5 years.
  • All education and experience in the related field will be considered.

REPORTS TO:  Principal or designated administrator

 

JOB GOAL:  The Reading Specialist is responsible for supporting student achievement in reading with special attention to Tier II and III instruction.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provide Professional Development to staff members.
  • Use current and relevant assessment tools to identify students in need of intervention services.
  • Identify specific areas of ability, deficiency, interest and/or talent to guide the development of an appropriate intervention plan for each student.
  • Teach targeted reading intervention to small groups of students daily using research-based strategies and resources.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including current technology and whole-group/small-group and individual learning.
  • Engage the learners in differential learning experiences.
  • Monitor the effectiveness and pacing of instruction relative to individual student proficiency and progress.
  • Compare, interpret, analyze, and generate data.
  • Work cooperatively with project director, instructional coach, building administrators and teachers to implement a comprehensive intervention program.
  • Strive to implement by instruction and action the county’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives stated in the Standards of Quality, Standards of Learning, and the school division’s curriculum.
  • Assist teachers with the collection of and analysis of data.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, county policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure; maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner; demonstrate the ability to handle unforeseen problems effectively.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by participating in in-service and staff development activities as required or assigned; meet technology competencies as approved by the Board.
  • Cooperate, relate well with associates, and reflect appropriate appearance, personality, and self-control.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or Board.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Involves limited physical tasks including lifting and will involve operation of technology equipment.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Based on teacher salary and years of experience.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
