TITLE:

                SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICER

 

POSITION TYPE:

                Non-Exempt

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

  • To maintain the security and safety of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Assist the administrative staff with enforcing policies and procedures for safe and orderly school building
  • Patrol campus and maintain security of buildings and grounds

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Security experience in a public school preferred
  • Some experience or training in a security-related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security procedures and best practices
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of School Board policies and procedures and Student Rights and Responsibilities
  • Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills
  • Must possess a valid Virginia’s driver’s license with positive DMV points

 

REPORTS TO:

                Building Administrator

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide a safe secure environment for students, staff, and guests on campus
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, staff, and community members
  • Supervises and directs pupil movement
  • Assist with fire drills and all other crisis prevention measures/evacuations
  • Help to create and maintain a working relationship with the local police, fire, and rescue departments
  • Detects, investigates, and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations
  • Regulate students’ behavior on campus, in cafeterias, restrooms, parking lots, and other open areas
  • Assist with controlling classroom disturbances or acts of defiance. Request assistance from school administration and/or police when necessary
  • Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations
  • Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts and/or referring to outside agency for resolution
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. incident and activity reports, security logs, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information
  • Follow district policies and administrative rules and regulations
  • Testifies in court and at School Board Disciplinary Review Committee hearings as required.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Demonstrate problem solving and responsible decision making skills
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

                180 days a year. Salary according to School Pay Plan.

 

EVALUATION

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
