TITLE:

School Counselor - All Levels

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement as guidance counselor
  • Five years of successful teaching experience at least two years of which shall have been at the secondary school level
  • Have demonstrated the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, school personnel and members of the community

Principal

 

JOB GOAL:

  • To assist students in overcoming problems that impede learning and to help them in making realistic and practical educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women

 

PERFORMANCE

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide academic and career planning to all students and assist them in course selection
  • Obtain and disseminate occupational information
  • Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with them in evolving education and occupation plus in terms of such evaluation
  • Assist students in discovering and developing their special abilities and talents
  • Register new students and orient them to school procedures and its various opportunities for learning
  • Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems which effect their learning
  • Maintain student academic records and protect their confidentiality
  • Confer with parents whenever necessary and arrange for parent/teacher conferences
  • Interpret the guidance program to students, parents, faculty and the community
  • Work with at-risk students to develop effective educational programs in order to reduce the number of school drop-outs
  • Provide group guidance activities
  • Assist the administration with standardized testing
  • Consult with students and parents with summer school options
  • Work with staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled
  • Serve as a referral resource as well as a consultant to outside agencies and families
  • Coordinate and make referrals to the visiting teacher on student absences/residency
  • Conduct classroom guidance lessons emphasizing the county T.O.P.S., conflict resolution, program
  • Coordinate special education services with the Director of Special Education which includes attending IEP, child study, and eligibility committee meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Involves limited physical tasks including lifting, and may involve operation of equipment such as computers, copiers, overhead projectors, etc.

 

TERMS OF

EMPLOYMENT:

12 month (10 month extended teacher contract); Salary based upon teacher’s scale

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
