TITLE:

  • Speech-Language Pathologist

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Holds an active, valid license in speech-language pathology (full or school only) issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech -Language Pathology (BASLP)

REPORTS TO:

  • Principal/Director of Special Education

JOB GOAL:

  • To help reduce or eliminate speech and language impairments that interfere with the individual student’s ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational program

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement
  • Provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech, language and hearing-impaired children
  • Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments
  • Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language fluency impairments
  • Provide screening to identify speech handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels
  • Assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate
  • Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student’s daily activities
  • Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate
  • Provide in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement
  • Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services
  • Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services
  • Compile case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate
  • Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Positions that are itinerant will involve frequent traveling between schools and will also involve periodic transporting of audiometers

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 10-month contract; Salary based upon teacher’s scale

 

EVALUATION:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
