Qualifications:

 

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in education or related field,  
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree with training and experience as instructor in adult education

In the role of ABE Instructor, instructors have three areas of duties and responsibilities:

  •  Teaching / Instruction
  •  Class Management / Record keeping
  •   Professional Development / Evaluation

 

Teaching / Instruction

  • Instructors are responsible for ensuring that class meets according to the set schedule.
  • Instructors integrate the College and Career Readiness Standards and workforce preparation activities into instruction. 
  • Ability to integrate technology into instruction. 
  • Instructors use research-based instructional materials that meet the instructional level and needs of the students.
  • Instructors utilize a variety of instructional techniques, to include individualized instruction, pairing, group work, teamwork, and whole class instruction. 
  • Instructors administer tests for placement (locator), diagnostic (pre-test), progress, and follow-up (post-test) to each student to determine progress and adjust instruction if needed.
  • Instructors develop learning plan with each student based on student interest and goals.
  • Instructors review and update learning plans with each student after 30 hours of instruction. 

 

Class Management / Record Keeping

  • Instructors enroll students and are responsible for documenting required demographic information, goals, assessments, attendance, and career plan on the ASPD forms.
  • Instructors maintain accurate student files and turn in complete and accurate attendance and student data to the regional office by the fifth of each month.
  • Instructors ensure that the classroom environment is welcoming and conducive to learning.
  • Instructors maintain adequate supplies of instructional materials in the classroom.
  • Instructors supervise any instructional aides or volunteers in the classroom.
  • Instructors are responsible for contacting each student who has missed 10 – 12 hours of instruction and encourage students to come back to class, or to find out why student left (goal completion or other reason) and document follow-up calls in student file.

         

Professional Development / Evaluation

  • Instructors must be able to utilize technology to participate in professional development activities.
  • Instructors must complete required online training every two years:
    • TABE certification training
    • VA Goal Setting training
    • VA Assessment Policy training
  • Instructors attend all local or regional meetings and complete training required by the regional office.
  • Instructors participate in a professional learning community.
  • Instructors attend other professional development activities whenever possible.
  • The local supervisor or regional office may visit a classroom to observe and make suggestions for the instructor to implement to improve instruction.
